Abstract

This article evaluates the crowbar as a robust multipurpose tool in environments characterized by infrastructural collapse, limited supply chains, and unpredictable operational hazards. While frequently treated as a simple lever, the crowbar’s functional range includes forced access, obstacle removal, impact delivery, material testing, and rapid environmental reconfiguration. The study combines ergonomic assessment, mechanical advantage modeling, and scenario-based analysis to determine how low-complexity tools support individual mobility in degraded research and industrial facilities. Results indicate that the crowbar’s effectiveness derives from its minimal maintenance requirements, intuitive affordances, and compatibility with a wide range of improvised tasks. Unlike specialized equipment, it remains operational across electrical failure, communication breakdown, and contamination events. However, the article also notes limitations in precision work, long-duration fatigue management, and safety when used near unstable machinery. The findings support renewed attention to simple mechanical tools in emergency preparedness, facility design, and human-factors training.
